Introduction:

I’ve always loved fall. The crisp air, colorful leaves, and the joy that comes with celebrating the season make it my favorite time of year. My family and I used to go all out—decorating our porch, deck, and even the bridge with purple and orange lights, cornstalks, scarecrows, and yard signs. It was magical, especially during the harvest parties we hosted. These days, we take a simpler approach. My son and I throw on our Halloween T-shirts, sit by the outdoor heater on our porch, and pass out candy to the neighborhood kids. It’s a fun way to stay involved while keeping things light and Christ-centered.

Halloween doesn’t have to be about spooky costumes or trick-or-treating. As Christians, we can celebrate in ways that are filled with fun, fellowship, and faith. If you're looking for alternatives to traditional Halloween celebrations, here are some creative ideas to try this season. For more on how Christians can celebrate Halloween, check out my article Why Christians Can Still Celebrate Halloween While Honoring God.

1. Host a Church or Family Fall Festival

One of my favorite ways to celebrate fall is by hosting a harvest party. Back when we used to go all out, we’d gather friends and family for hayrides, pumpkin painting, and some good old-fashioned fall fun. Hosting a festival is a great alternative to trick-or-treating and can be tailored to focus on fellowship and faith. Whether at your church or in your backyard, you can create a warm, inviting atmosphere that brings people together.

2. Bible-Themed Costume Contest

When my kids were younger, we used to have fun dressing up, but now I love the idea of adding a faith-based twist. Hosting a Bible-themed costume contest is a fun way to celebrate, especially if you want to keep the focus on the positive. Guests can dress up as their favorite Bible characters—whether it’s Esther, David, or even Noah with his animals. It’s a fun and creative way to get everyone involved.

3. Organize a Scripture Scavenger Hunt

One of the best features of our yard is the ravine that backs into a wooded area. It’s the perfect place to host a scripture scavenger hunt. Imagine sending the kids out with clues based on Bible verses, guiding them through nature to find hidden treasures. This is an exciting way to combine the beauty of fall with the power of God’s word. For example, you can use verses like Matthew 13:44 (“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field…”) and hide small treasures along the way that reinforce the message. It’s a perfect activity for both kids and adults!

4. Host a Faith-Filled Movie Night

Instead of watching scary movies like Halloween, Freddy Krueger, or Michael Myers, which can invite demonic influences, choose uplifting, faith-based films that bring the family together in a positive way. Studies show that exposure to demonic or dark themes through media can open spiritual doors we aren’t always aware of. For example, many believe that demons can attach themselves to individuals through horror movies or occult-related entertainment.

Let’s choose to glorify God in all that we do, even when it comes to the media we consume.

5. Bible Verse Treat Bags

Passing out candy has always been part of our Halloween tradition, and we love greeting the kids in our neighborhood. Instead of handing out plain candy, why not add a faith-based twist? You can create treat bags filled with candy and a Bible verse or positive affirmation attached. It’s a small way to plant seeds of faith in the hearts of those you meet.

6. Host a Praise and Worship Night with a Fall Twist

What better way to end a faith-filled Halloween celebration than with a night of praise and worship? Tie it into the season by setting up outdoors with fall decorations, string lights, and cozy blankets. To keep everyone warm, you can use one of those tall Outdoor Heaters like the ones restaurants use—I have one, and it’s perfect for keeping the porch cozy on cool autumn nights. Encourage guests to come in fall colors, and close the evening with hot apple cider and worship songs. It’s a great way to replace the traditional Halloween night activities with something that glorifies God.

Conclusion:

Fall is my favorite season, and Halloween offers the perfect opportunity to bring family, friends, and faith together. Whether you’re hosting a festival, handing out Bible-verse treat bags, or having a cozy movie night, there are so many ways to celebrate the season without losing sight of what matters.
